29 de May de 2018

We invite you to follow the third Expert Voices session on Facebook.

This Wednesday, May 30, following the agenda of virtual presentations of the Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean free of child labor, the third session of Expert Voices will be broadcast through Facebook Live. This time Mariana Beheran, coordinator of the Research Unit of the Country Office for Argentina of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), will talk about child and adolescent labor in migratory contexts, emphasizing the particularity of this issue for our region.

According to latest reports, between 2013 and 2016 the migration of children and adolescents, in its four different modalities, has increased, especially in the area called the Northern Triangle of Central America (El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala). Migration is a right, however, the migratory route, whether international or internal, is usually not free of dangers to which migrant children and adolescents, accompanied or not, are more vulnerable.

Migrant minors face great challenges both at places of transit and at the place of arrival, ranging from the interruption of their education to abuse, child labor, sexual exploitation and human trafficking. In the case of migrant children and adolescents who work, they receive low wages, work longer hours, their educational trajectories are more intermittent and face a higher mortality rate compared to native children and adolescents who they also work (ILO, 2017a).

Enforcing the rights of all children and adolescents, even those who are in the condition of regular or irregular migrants, is still a challenge for our region. Achieving sustainable development also implies including migration as a cross-cutting issue in the approach to child labor and the public policies created to address it.

In Latin America and the Caribbean there are several instances, agreements and declarations that support and support the measures and actions carried out on the subject, but it is necessary to generate even more to achieve a greater impact.

To guarantee the protection of migrant children and adolescents, the 2030 Agenda already includes goals regarding these issues and requires us to reflect and understand the multidimensional nature of these realities and thus find better alternatives to adopt.

We are waiting for you this Wednesday, May 30, through the fanpage of the  Latin American Network against child labor !
